چکیده

Studies of elemental abundances in stars belonging to the thin and the thick disk of our Galaxy are reviewed. Edvardsson et al. (1993) found strong evidence of [α/Fe] variations among F and G main sequence stars with the same [Fe/H] and interpreted these differences as due to radial gradients in the star formation rate in the Galactic disk. Several recent studies suggest, however, that the differences are mainly due to a separation in [α/Fe] between thin and thick disk stars, indicating that these populations are discrete Galactic components, as also found from several kinematical studies. Further evidence of a chemical separation between the thick and the thin disk is obtained from studies of [Mn/Fe] and the ratio between rand s-process elements. The interpretation of these new data in terms of formation scenarios and time scales for the disk and halo components of our Galaxy is discussed.

From Thin to Thick: the Impact of X-ray Irradiation on Accretion Disks in Agn

We argue that the X-ray and UV flux illuminating the parsec-scale accretion disk around luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN) is super-Eddington with respect to the local far-infrared dust opacity. The far infrared opacity may be larger than in the interstellar medium of the Milky Way due to a combination of supersolar metallicity and the growth of dust grains in the dense accretion disk. Becau...

Evolution of Thick Accretion Disks Produced by Tidal Disruption Events

Geometrically thick disks may form after tidal disruption events, and rapid accretion may lead to short flares followed by long-term, lower-level emission. Using a novel accretion disk code which relies primarily on global conservation laws and the assumption that viscosity is everywhere positive, a broad range of physically allowed evolutionary sequences of thick disks is investigated. The mai...

Physical Conditions in Obscuring Tori and Molecular Accretion Disks, and Are They Really the Same Thing?

The nature of the obscuring material in active galactic nuclei is still uncertain. Although some sources, such as Cygnus A, show evidence for a geometrically thick “torus” as originally suggested, recent work on the radiation-driven warping instability discovered by Pringle suggests that obscuration by thin, warped disks may play a crucial role in AGN.

Fueling of Active Galactic Nuclei

Radiation pressure from the absorption and scattering of starlight by dust grains may be a crucial feedback mechanism in starburst galaxies and the self-gravitating parsec-scale disks that accompany the fueling of active galactic nuclei. I review the case for radiation pressure in both optically-thin and highly optically-thick contexts. I describe the conditions for which Eddington-limited star...

The Observational Appearance of Slim Accretion Disks

We reexamine the hypothesis that the optical/UV/soft X-ray continuum of Active Galactic Nuclei is thermal emission from an accretion disk. Previous studies have shown that fitting the spectra with the standard, optically thick and geometrically thin accretion disk models often led to luminosities which contradict the basic assumptions adopted in the standard model. There is no known reason why ...
